Frida Kahlo Theatre and Housing Project

    About

This conceptual design for Coalition for Responsible Community Development (CRCD), the Frida Kahlo Theatre and Affordable Housing Project proposes a dynamic mixed-use development that brings together arts, culture, and affordable living within a unified community-focused environment. Located on a 1.31-acre site in Los Angeles, the project is envisioned as a cultural and residential landmark that strengthens neighborhood identity while creating meaningful opportunities for connection and engagement.

At the center of the development is a 99-seat theatre paired with 100% affordable housing, establishing a vibrant destination where performance, community gathering, and daily life intersect. The project is planned to include between 50 and 75 residential units, with the final density shaped by parking and operational considerations for both the housing and theatre components. Together, these programs create a layered urban environment that supports residents while serving as a cultural resource for the broader community.

The architectural concept emphasizes flexibility, efficiency, and long-term sustainability through the use of modular construction strategies. This approach allows for streamlined construction while supporting adaptable living environments and thoughtfully designed communal spaces that encourage interaction among residents and visitors. The integration of public and private spaces is carefully considered to foster both a sense of neighborhood connectivity and moments of individual refuge.

Guided by a design philosophy rooted in constructability, innovation, and social responsibility, the project balances practical constraints with an emphasis on human experience. Every aspect of the development, from the residential units to the theatre and shared gathering areas, is designed to inspire belonging, creativity, and participation. By combining affordable housing with cultural programming, the Frida Kahlo Theatre and Affordable Housing Project reflect a broader vision for architecture as a catalyst for community empowerment and sustainable urban growth in Los Angeles.

Project initiated and led as Design Director as a co-founder / partner at QDG Architecture.
