Century Village at Cabrillo

Completed in 2009 for Century Housing, Phase III of Century Villages at Cabrillo represents a significant expansion of one of the nation’s most comprehensive residential and supportive service communities for formerly homeless families. Developed with a construction budget of $10 million, the project introduces more than 75 residential units alongside a network of communal and administrative spaces designed to foster stability, growth, and long-term independence.

Located in Long Beach, the development was conceived as more than a housing solution—it was envisioned as a supportive neighborhood where architecture actively contributes to healing, connection, and personal empowerment. The project integrates residential buildings with a clubhouse, counseling and administrative offices, meeting spaces, library and media rooms, and shared laundry facilities, creating a cohesive environment that supports residents through multiple stages of social transition and recovery.

The architectural approach combines courtyard housing typologies with low-rise, single-loaded corridor buildings to establish a balance between privacy and community engagement. Carefully organized open spaces encourage interaction among residents while maximizing natural light, ventilation, and visual openness throughout the site. This hybrid configuration promotes safety and accessibility while reinforcing a sense of belonging within the community.

Working closely with the client, the design team expanded the definition of sustainability beyond environmental performance to include social and economic resilience. The project emphasizes dignity, ownership, and participation by creating spaces where residents can develop self-identity, build relationships, and reconnect with the broader community. Through thoughtful planning and human-centered design, Century Villages at Cabrillo Phase III demonstrates how architecture can serve as a catalyst for social transformation while strengthening the urban fabric of Long Beach.
